Drawing and painting holidays

Nationally known artist Tony Grogan will be your tutor an exciting and enriching experience that will allow you to explore and enhance your creativity. These very popular and successful holidays have been offered since the inception of the Molweni Private Game Reserve.

Tony will give instruction and guidance in drawing, pen and wash, water colour and in the use of a sketch book. During the two courses there will be plenty of time to learn to draw or do water colour if you are a beginner or to improve your existing techniques.

As the emphasis will be on personal help and encouragement, the total number of participants will not exceed eight. Non-participating partners are most welcome.


Private groups

Non-participating partners

Non-participating partners may participate in any of the general Molweni activities. These include swimming, hiking, walking amongst the game, game drives, bird watching and botanising. With no large predators one is free to walk where one likes. If you have your own transport, there are interesting excursions in the surrounding area. Riding on horseback is a superb way of observing game at close quarters and to leisurely enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Housekeeping details

  • The costs of Molweni Creative Escapes held at Molweni Private Game Reserve are all inclusive of tuition, accommodation and all meals.
  • There is no telephone land-line available at the lodges.
  • While Adelaide, 15 minutes away, is small, it has good medical facilities, shops and banks – and a golf course.
  • We suggest that you bring the following - a small torch, protection against the sun, any snacks you might like, drinks - Molweni will serve wine at night - binoculars, and camera.
  • You should plan to arrive on Sunday afternoon with time to settle into your accommodation before a reception and buffet supper. After supper there will be an orientation talk. Departure is after breakfast on the Saturday.

How to get there

Molweni Private Game Reserve is easily accessible by car and the roads are good. However, for an extra cost of R 400.00 per person you can be transferred to and from Port Elisabeth airport. See Map.

Course outline and requirements

The drawing and painting courses will include demonstrations and will be mainly out of doors.
Molweni is a very beautiful place and an inspirational environment in which to paint and draw.  It’s landscape and its environs offer a wide variety of subjects - natural forms, landscapes, wildlife and buildings - to stimulate and excite the artist in you.

Tony is an experienced teacher, his approach is positive and encouraging and as the course is limited to small groups (maximum eight) he is able to devote a lot of personal attention to each participant. People with a wide range of skill and experience have benefited from the course.
You will be encouraged to record your visual impressions and written thoughts and observations in your sketchbook so that when you leave you will have a treasured personal memory of your visit to Molweni.

Course 1:  Drawing – from life and nature

Townscape drawing

The accent of the 2006 course will be on the approach to drawing and a special a way of seeing and expressing your feelings in various techniques. The length and structure of the course may differ in 2007.

Day 1 
Arrive mid afternoon.
Early evening presentation by Tony with drawing exercises

Day 2 
Exploring and developing drawing skills in the studio

Day 3 
Landscape drawing and natural forms in the veld 
Drawing essay of ruined homestead

Course 2:  Watercolour painting 

This course will also include a strong drawing component which is basic to all painting. The length and structure of the course may differ in 2007.

Day 1 
Arrive mid afternoon.

Line and wash techniques

Day 2
Watercolour demonstrations and exercises in and around the studio
Line and wash techniques

Day 3 
A day in the open in the Reserve painting natural forms

Day 4
A sketchbook essay on the village of Adelaide

Day 5
General landscape painting, e.g. the Winterberg

Art materials

Molweni will supply:

  • an A4 sized sketch book of Ashran cartridge paper and a few pages of a good watercolour paper
  • rough paper
  • easels
  • folding chairs for sketching

Bring your own:

Course 1: Drawing

  • Drawing materials - pencils (2b and 3B), conte crayons, charcoal, pen and ink or felt-nib drawing pens, etc.

Course 2: Watercolour painting

  • Reasonably good water colour set (Student colours are fine) or separate pans or tubes
  • The following colours must be included - reds (alizarin and cadmium), blues (cerulean and ultramarine), cadmium yellow, earth colours (raw sienna, burnt sienna and burnt umber)
  • Mixing pan
  • Container for water
  • Drawing materials for line and wash. As for Course 1.
  • Watercolour blocks (approx. 300 gm and A4 size)

The tutor

Tony Grogan is a noted artist and illustrator. He has held frequent one-man exhibitions of his work, and has illustrated many books and publications.

He has also authored several of his own books of drawings and paintings which include Vanishing Cape Town, Settler Country, Between the Cape and Cairo, A Cape Town Sketchbook and Tony Grogan's Eastern Cape, all of which have received critical acclaim.

His work won international recognition with Lyn Bedford Hall’s book Figjam and Foxtrot illustrated by Tony being awarded the best book in the world in its category of illustrated cookbooks at the 2004 international Gourmet Cookbook festival.

A very versatile artist, Tony is also one of South Africa’s top political cartoonists.
